Maheri Village Houses
Kamares Houses

The village is called Maheri and is located in an area of the province of Aporkoronas, the beauty of which is comparable to the Tuscany and Languedoc landscapes.

It is built amphitheatrically on the mountain slope at an altitude of 160 m, between two gorges. It is one of the historical villages at the foot of the White Mountains (2500 m) and it overlooks the fertile plain of Apokoronas, with its sources, rivers and ancient vestiges.

The Cretan Sea spreads out in front of it, with the sandy beaches of the bay of Kalyves. On the left, on the horizon, the hill of Ancient Aptera towers up, and on the right, the verdurous hills with olive trees, cypresses and picturesque villages. In the background, the mythical summit of Mount Idi can often be discerned.

Despite the fact that the village of Maheri remained apart from the noisy crowd of the busy roads and tourism of Crete, it is easily accessed. It is located at a distance of 4 km from the national road crossing the island northwards, at 23 km from the city of Chania, at 18 km from the harbour of Souda, at 24 km from the airport, at 40 km from Rethymno and at 1 km from the road to Sfakia and the south coast of Crete.

It is also an ideal starting point for archaeological tourism (Aptera, Stylo, Chania, Polyrrhenia, Knossos, Phaestos), religious tourism (Byzantine chapels, monasteries), for walking the old pathways and through the gorges (Samaria, Aradaina, Dyktamo), as well as for daily excursions aiming at familiarizing oneself with the bountiful fauna and flora of the island, the numerous historical and pre-historical monuments, and the astounding beaches of both the west coast of Crete, such as Phalasarna, Elafonisi, Balo, and the south coast of Chania, where the famous beaches of Fragokastello, Palaiohora, Aghia Roumeli and the unique bays of Skakia and Loutro stretch out.
